Solid Waste Division

This division is responsible for the direct collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste in the core city area (mainly downtown and surrounding areas).  The division oversees collection and disposal of solid waste including recyclables generated within Duval County (excluding the Beaches, Baldwin and areas serviced by city crews) through the services of three private contractors. The division cleans litter and illegal dumping in the public right-of-way along streets and roads as well as operates a household hazardous waste site where citizens can drop off household wastes for proper disposal. The division is also responsible for the oversight of landfill operation and permitting.  The Solid Waste Division has a compliance team that enforces the ordinance as well as informs the public about recycling, hazardous waste and solid waste issues.  It has 132 employees.

This year, in addition to the activities mentioned above, the division will be overseeing the permitting, design, and bid process associated with the expansion of the current landfill as well as providing litigation support for an ongoing lawsuit.

Budget:

In 2010, the budget for this division is $71,625,015.
